Hi Marcy. You write really well and this is entertaining. I also think you should start with the bat incident. The dialogue after that point is great. All the best in the competition.

As others have said, Marcy, you write well and your voice is fun to read.
I loved the bat incident and that wonderful line about him wanting to get away from her as much as she wanted to get away from the bat.
I'm not sure though that you've started this story in the right place. It's a very slow build to get to the action, and I'd prefer to see the story start at the moment the bat flies at her head and she runs out screaming. The back story of why she's here could follow later.
